Install the app
The app is the same on every platform: it draws the game screens itself, keeps your saved servers and sign-ins, and carries a complete server inside it so it can host a world of its own. The current release is v0.21.2, published 2026-10-26. Every build is free, MIT licensed and served from GitHub releases; the Android app is also on Google Play.
Pick your download
| Platform | File | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | Installer (.exe) | Choose the install folder. Updates itself from inside the app. |
| macOS, Apple Silicon | Disk image (.dmg) | Not notarized yet: the first open needs Open Anyway in Privacy & Security. See Install on macOS. Updates itself. |
| macOS, Intel | Disk image (.dmg) | Same as above, for Intel Macs. |
| Linux, any distribution | AppImage | No install. Make it executable and run it. Updates itself. |
| Debian, Ubuntu, Mint | .deb package | Installs to /opt; the app installs the next .deb itself, asking for your password. |
| Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE | .rpm package | As above, with an .rpm. |
| Linux, Flatpak | Flatpak bundle | Sandboxed. Cannot start a local model or an agent program from inside the sandbox. Updates itself. |
| Linux, portable | Tarball | Unpack anywhere and run the binary. Updates itself. |
| Android 8.0 or newer, 64-bit | Google Play or the APK | The APK is the same build for people who sideload. See Install on Android. |
There is no iOS app yet. An iPhone can still join a world in Safari through the invite link. On a Steam Deck any Linux build runs; added to Steam as a non-Steam game it starts full screen in Game Mode and takes the controller (see Install on Linux).
What the installers set up
- The
odm://link handler. Every installer registers it with the operating system, so clicking an invite link a friend sent opens the app straight on the join screen. On Android the app also claimsopendungeonmaster.com/jlinks once the Play listing's signing certificate is verified. - A private data folder. Saved servers, sign-in tokens (kept in the OS keychain where one exists) and your device world live in the app's own data folder, never inside the install location. Reinstalling or updating keeps them.
- The bundled server. On first start the app copies its server out of the read-only install into that data folder, so an AppImage or a Play install can write to its own world.
What you see on first launch
The title screen, never a sign-in form. A first run shows Begin your world with one button, Start playing, beside a menu with Join with a code and Add a server for anyone who was sent an invite. A short guided setup follows: name your adventurer (which creates your device world and makes you its owner), choose who tells the story (a person, your OpenAI key, or on a desktop an agent you already have or a local model; the local door says what this computer can run, or why it cannot), then Voices and music (what reads the story aloud, and the sound library). Every step can be changed later in Settings. Then the app's home, which is also your world's home. A short guided tour walks it once and can be replayed from Settings.
