First launch
The app opens on its own title screen. It is never a sign-in form: signing in belongs to each world, and a first run has no world yet.
Begin your world
The title reads Begin your world: "No server needed. Your world lives on this computer, and friends can join from anywhere once you invite them." Press Start playing. Beside it, the main menu offers Join with a code and Add a server for anyone who was sent an invite; the rest of the menu opens once your world exists.
Name your adventurer
One field: the name friends will see at the table. Letters, digits, underscore and dash, up to 24 characters. The app creates the world on this computer, makes this account its owner, and keeps the password for you; you can set your own later in the world's Account settings. There is nothing to verify and no email. If a first start runs long (a slow disk, an antivirus reading the files), the app still makes you the owner the next time; you are never asked for a setup code on your own world.
Who tells the story?
The guided setup's Story AI step asks once for the whole computer:
- No AI. A person runs the games.
- Your OpenAI API key. Storytelling, pictures and optional read-aloud billed to your key. Paste it and choose from the models it lists.
- An agent you already have. Codex, Grok Build, Claude Code or opencode narrates on its own sign-in, and Codex and Grok Build can paint the pictures too. The screen shows which are installed and signed in.
- Local AI on this machine. Free and private. Before you open it, the door already says what this computer runs (gpt-oss-20b on a 16 GB graphics card, for example) or why it cannot: a local storyteller needs at least 16 GB of graphics memory.
Pick the human option if you are not sure; the Story AI button on the home screen reopens this screen any time. Details in Story AI on the desktop and System requirements.
Voices and music
The last step: what reads the story aloud (OpenAI's voices on a saved key, a free Kokoro found on this computer or your network, or on screen only), with a sample to hear, and the sound library download for rooms, music and sound effects. Both are optional and live afterwards in Settings, Narration and sound. Then the app's home.
The home
The app's home is also your world's home; the app never shows the world's own title page beside it. On a world with no campaign yet it reads "Every campaign starts with an empty table." with Forge a new world, which opens the campaign creator; closing the creator without a campaign comes back here. The main menu groups ways into play separately from Characters, Workshop, Rulebook and the app's tools. Quick start appears only on a host with an AI storyteller. Opens on names the host used by New campaign, Characters and Workshop; Change chooses another eligible host. Once you have played, the table you were last at fills the screen under "Continue your tale" with Enter the world, its latest scene, the party's faces and a "When last we left" recap, even while your world sleeps. Your other tables sit below as save slots grouped by host, each with Duplicate and Delete. Inside a world the game's pages own the whole window; the account menu's App home, App settings and App guide lead back to the app.
The guided tour
A spotlight walks the title screen once on first launch, one door at a time with a card explaining it. Replay it from Settings, Help, Replay tour. The table and the workshop have their own tours the first time you see them.
The drawer
The menu at the top left opens the drawer: every saved server with its campaigns and covers, a hide offline switch, and beside each server's name a menu with Forget this server and Delete my account on this server. On a wide window the drawer becomes a fixed rail.
Settings
A contents row jumps to four groups: Playing on this device, Your world on this computer, Accounts and connections and Help and maintenance. They hold Audio and dice, controllers, Story AI, sharing, Narration and sound, Story memory, Move your world, saved hosts, updates (with a Beta updates switch), tours and repair tools. See Themes, effects and device settings.
