Version compatibility

How app and server versions fit together: which server each app release carries, the three ways an app draws a host by server version, and the pairs that were released together.

Desktop appAndroid appServer

The apps and the server have separate release trains. An app release is built against a specific server version, which it carries inside for the , and it can visit any server; how it draws a server depends on that server's version.

How an app draws a host

Server versionThe app shows
The version the app was built with, or newer (0.28.4 for app 0.19.4)Its , fed by the host's data over the app's session. Controls, theme and motion are the app's on every host.
0.16.0 up to that version: the app's bundled server serves the screens and forwards data calls to the host. Controlled by the Visiting hosts switch in Settings.
Older than 0.16.0The host's own pages in a .

The bar for the app's own screens rises with each app release, because the screens save settings and call routes an older host would drop (the table's pacing and breaks, for 0.28.4). A host newer than the app usually still opens on the app's own screens; a feature the host added that the app does not know is simply absent until the app updates. The update popup on the desktop says so.
