Take the table with you

Open Dungeon Master comes in two parts. Everyone at the table installs the app, which can also host a world by itself. The server app is optional: one person runs it on a machine that stays on, and the whole group plays there.

Part one · for every player

The app

Desktop

The full app. Connects to any server, or runs one itself for offline play and for hosting your friends.

Windows 10 or 11, macOS or 64-bit Linux, with 4 GB of memory; a local AI storyteller needs 16 GB of graphics memory. System requirements

Android

The full app on a phone or tablet: host a world on the device and share it with a room code, or join a friend's table. Characters, dice, maps, chat and voice.

Android 8.0 or newer, 64-bit. Install notes · System requirements

Part two · optional, for whoever hosts

The server app v0.30.2

Run the table for everyone else on a machine that stays on: a home server, a NAS, a rented box or your gaming PC. Accounts, campaigns and art live there, it reaches your local model, ComfyUI and Kokoro, and your party joins from the app or a browser. You do not need it to play; the app can host a world by itself.

With Docker

The easy way. The image carries the built server, the content pack and the embedding model, so there are no setup steps: pull it, start it, open the address.

Run with Docker, about ten minutes

Without Docker

Run the server app straight from its release archive with Node 22.18 or newer. This is also the simplest way to let a Codex, Grok Build or Claude Code agent already signed in on the same machine narrate; the Docker image can only use one built into it.

What you actually need

To play with a human DM: nothing else.

Install the app on a phone or a computer, share a room code, and the table runs. Voice and the rules engines are included.

To add the AI DM: a model.

Either an OpenAI key saved once on your device, a CLI agent you already pay for (Codex or Grok Build, which also paint the pictures, or Claude Code or opencode) on a desktop or server, or a local model on a graphics card with 16 GB or more, such as gpt-oss-20b on a 16 GB gaming card. New to this? Start with the suggested setup, and check System requirements.

To host for a group: Node 22+ or Docker.

One machine runs the server. Add ComfyUI for scene art and Kokoro for narration if you want them; both are optional.

Release notes and checksums

The buttons on this page point at v0.21.2, published 2026-10-26. Every build is a GitHub release with its own changelog. Server images follow their own versions: a release tagged v0.22.0 publishes 0.22.0, 0.22 and, unless it is a pre-release, latest.

Google Play or the APK

Both are the same build. Google Play installs the app and keeps it updated; the APK is for people who sideload, and updates by installing the newer one over it. The two are signed differently, so switching means uninstalling first: export your world with Move your world before you do.
